Being in school is a chore. It takes a great deal of work, carefully planned over the course of a week, or a month, or a quarter to make sure everything gets done with the total attention it deserves….are you laughing yet? No one puts in the time “needed” to correctly complete their college work. No, instead it’s a hurry at the end each week or two to complete a 10-page paper or learn 200 years of ancient Roman history overnight. You all do it; I did it. It is likely a better training ability than all the random stuff you “learn,” because really in real life do you think that will have time to sit and schedule everything that pops into your life in advance. Yeah…thought not.
Anyways, for those of you just entering college from the snore-inducing apathy and ease of High School, you’re likely very unprepared for the sheer quantity of work you’ll have to pull out in the final second. I am not saying it’s simple only because you will procrastinate. No, it’s still tough. You should take a time to do your work correctly. It is a fine art, in which I believe I Have become something of a Renoir.
To begin with, make sure you’ve got all your books and notes. Also, double check and make sure your professor does not have a site. They’ll usually tell you, but more than once I Have found a course’s notes sitting in an archive online, particularly now that 90% of them put everything they educate you into PowerPoint presentations and then only read it to you for an hour every day (yeah, lazy). It is usually just an extra 30 seconds out of their day to put the stuff on the internet, and then when they receive twenty plus emails per week asking for the lecture notes, they merely need to point you to the site. Well, some are a little more facetious about their students not even bothering to come to class and don’t openly offer said notes. Or…just ask a classmate. But then you’re relying on them paying attention.
You must have your novels also. Should you never bothered buying them as you would just take notes or go to SparkNotes, then you had better purchase them because BSing your way using paper is going to choose at least some resources. You can not magically assess the advice from only being near cleverer folks. The school would be a lot easier if that were the case.
So, take a seat and begin reading. Yup, you’re going to be reading a lot the night before your work is due. However, this is better than doing all the assigned reading, because now you’re trying to find particular information. Instead of general learning (which would just stick around and clutter up your brain after), you’re doing targeted research. An eighth the time, and none of that pesky remembering it. You must have your topic at least. Otherwise, begin browsing message boards and snag one from someone smarter than you. Do not ever take their work though. The final thing you require is to get kicked out of school for plagiarism. It is sluggish and awkward. Steal concepts, but never words. And in the event you steal a concept from the middle of their work, mention them. Your university isn’t going to take kindly to cheating.
You cannot procrastinate now. You have done that for three weeks, so I am sorry (I understand it hurts), but when it comes to real physical writing time, you will want at least three hours to type your paper, which speaks nothing of composing it. And composing it involves finding quotations and that ever so pesky chore of thinking. No tally, and place your phone on the charger. Now open up the word processor and only begin typing.
You most likely think you have writer’s block. But, writer’s block is totally unrelated to having no idea what you’re talking about. You are stuck with the second one right now, so just keep on reading on your subject and finding bits and pieces to put together.

You select a prominent theme from the novel you only “read.” Locate a source that reflects or better yet foils this theme and compare the two. Do not just list how they are different though. That is high school stuff right there. You’ll want to compose exactly how the outside source alters what you think of your novel. It seems tough, but jus thinks about it. You have got Great Expectations. It has a primary character who goes on a kind of quest. Now you have a classic archetype of which there are hundreds of sources to draw on. You take a basic outline of the archetype and apply it to Pip’s quest and how he fits it, and when he does not fit it. Now you finish your paper by describing why he does not fit it sometimes. Which gets you back to the Dickensian perspectives part. Incredibly simple; you’re not telling anyone anything new, but three things will guarantee a great level.
- Should you write well at all. You have got to be a halfway decent writer, which if you’re in school I’ll suppose you are.
- Professors love outside references. It demonstrates initiative and research and makes it seem like you did extra work (which you didn’t). I’ve written papers immediately without drafts and without ever reading them back to myself and received comments that I must have spent hours working on it. Not quite.
- Self-Confidence in your declarations. Say everything with complete conviction, and back it up with a quote. Do this enough and even in case you’re incorrect, it will seem as if you have made a decent point, which gets you brownie points.
